Volunteers from the Southwest Water Coalition are hosting a major San Felipe Creek Cleanup on May 24, and everyone in the community is encouraged to participate. The San Felipe Creek is a cherished community resource, the lifeblood of Del Rio. Sadly, it is suffering. Creek conditions are so severe that the Southwest Water Coalition has teamed up with Keep Texas Beautiful, Trash Free Gulf, and Texas Litter Database to conduct a systematic litter survey of the area.

The San Felipe Springs Golf Course has struggled with profitability for years, profits steadily declining since the City of Del Rio acquired ownership in 2015. Major golf course improvements are required, but the municipal business is not profitable enough to reinvest in itself. The San Felipe Spring Golf course has been kept up by money from the city’s General Fund for years. To prevent shutdown or emergency sale, the city is making big changes.

9 pageant queens from Del Rio joined the most extravagant part of San Antonio’s multi-day Fiesta festival by appearing in the Flambeau Parade this year, which is known as the largest illuminated night parade in America. Last weekend, the Del Rio High School Smokin’ Rams BBQ Club traveled to Burnet, Texas to compete in the Texas High School State Competition where 3 teams: The Smokin’ Rams, The Blue Flame, and Certified Delicious, represented DRHS in the competition, showcasing the skills and recipes they have been practicing under the guidance of their instructor, Chef Adan Cortez for the last few months.

Laughlin Air Force Base is actively trying to connect with local small businesses and wants them to bid on more projects. They're even hosting a free training event on Wednesday morning, May 21, 2025, called "Industry Day," to teach people how to become government contractors. Laughlin AFB awards between $35 and $45 million in contracts each fiscal year, with individual bid solicitations ranging from small purchases to multi-million-dollar projects.

By the beginning of the 2025-2026 school year, Garfield Elementary will be no more as it becomes Garfield Middle School. After catching wind of the news, former Garfield Elementary staff planned a reunion outside the school entrance at 300 W Martin Street while its signage still reads ‘Garfield Elementary’.
