Lightning Strike Believed to Spark Fire That Gutted Hwy 90 Home, Family Requests Privacy

Updated: Jun 12

An 85-year-old homeowner is unharmed after her house, located off Hwy 90 near Lakeview, became engulfed in flames during last night’s storm. Sources close to the situation are reporting that the cause of the fire was a lightning strike. Video of the fire shows the home’s second floor appearing to be completely engulfed as firefighters battled the flames overnight.

The homeowner’s son says the situation is a “tragedy”, but he's relieved his mother made it out safely. He’d like to maintain privacy for his family during this time.

Visuals of the aftermath this morning show charred and crumbling remains of the home --- and a roof that has completely caved in.

Both Val Verde County Fire Department and Del Rio Fire Department arrived at the scene. We've received no word yet on their assessment of the situation.
